Meet our team:

Anaesthetist

You might be wondering what's an ODP?

Operating Department Practitioner helps get the operating theatre ready for your C-section and will look after you throughout the surgery with the team. In the theatre, you'll also meet doctors, midwife, nurses, healthcare assistant and an anaesthetist. Anaesthetist will help with your medicines to help relieve pain, and help with the physiologocal stress of surgery. Everyone is working together to make sure you and your baby are safe and well cared for!

What is C-Section?

A C-Section is an operation in which the doctor creates a little incision in the belly and the uterus to help in the delivery of your child. This can be required if labour is difficult or if you and the baby are not safe during a vaginal birth.

 Why it might be needed?

  • Baby is breech (feet or bottom first)
  • Baby is too big for normal delivery
  • Placenta is low-lying ( Placenta Praevia)
  • Previous C-section
  • Emergency reasons during labour

Breakdown of different stages:

Before Your Surgery

  • You’ll have vital signs checked and blood test

• You’ll meet the surgeon and anaesthetist

• You’ll be asked to sign a consent form

• You may need to fast (no food or drink for 6–8 hours)

• Bring your hospital bag and birth partner

It's normal to feel nervous but your care team will be there to support you.
